Students define translations and reflections and discuss how they can be found in dance, in math, and in the world around them. They make polygons with giant stretchy bands and explore flipping them (making reflections) and sliding them (making translations). They work with a small group to create a dance with a polygon and flips and a slides. Students label the polygon, draw the shape, the reflections, the translations, and explain their dance in writing. Designed to be taught in a sequence, this is lesson three of three: 1) Lines of Symmetry – Mirror Dance, 2) Parallel and Perpendicular Lines – Symmetrical Pathway Maps, 3) Translations and Reflections – Dancing Slides and Flips.
